GEOMENTARY FAQ - [Now supporting both IE 6.0+ & Firefox]

What is Geomentary?

Geomentary can best be described as Google Map and Google Video Mashup site. This site utilizes Google's Map API and Google Videos database to put it all together.

Why Geomentary?

Well, I always want to learn more about areas, regions and places. Whether it be some documentary on history, travel or something exciting about it. Google video has 1000's of videos that are awesome and are area and issue specific. My focus was on putting some map or regional context to those videos. Always wanted to tag them visually. Geomentary was my solution. Rather doing it just for myself, I decided to share this method with others and have them do the same thing. I am sure you have thought about it before but never got round to it - well here it is - for you and me and any one else who sees benefit in this type of tagging.

What technology was used here?

My language and platform of choice is C# & .NET 2.0, hence that is what I used here. Geomentary was developed using C# 2.0 on .NET 2.0 platform, MS SQL 2005 server, Microsoft Enterprise Library Patterns and Practices 2006, javascripting sitting on top of Google MAP API and Google Videos database which Google so generously shares with all of us. For UI interaction, I used MS AJAX 1.0, a recently released platform for .NET AJAX development. Some of the UI components used were by AJAX Toolkit, a third party partner with Microsoft AJAX group.

Is this an open source free for all project?

Currently I have not decided on that yet. Still developing this further and see where it goes and how it is received by the users like yourself. So the simple answer is not yet.

Is this going commercial?

Honestly I have not thought about that, or if I can. As I mentioned before this site was a result of my personal need. Since now it is out there and if you have some extra cash laying around, throw it my way - I will take it gladly... :)

How many developers involved in this?

LOL ! Just one ! This is a one man show. I love doing this kind of stuff. From concept to development and implementation. I dream up stuff and then assemble it. Always looking for more challenge. Having experience in GIS mapping, geology, software design and development, media, movie making and UI design, I pulled this whole thing together on my spare time.

How long did it take to put it all together?

Its a tough question to answer. Since no project manager was involved and I was only interested in coding and UI design, I lost track of time. And mostly this was a hobby deal on "spare" time that I really don't have - I will say it took me about six to eight weeks to bring it to where it is today.

I teach and want students to use this on campus for history and geography lessons - Can I?

Sure can, its applications are limitless. Teach away. If you have some special needs or want it implemented in an isolated campus network environment, that can be arranged. Contact me for details.

Are you Google Video only?

Yes, pinging Google Video Database currently. Since Google has acquired YouTube and is merging the systems, YouTube videos will start flowing in soon. Not to say that I won't expand it to other internet video providers, even some live Internet TV providers down the road. Oh yes, I love Google all the way :)

Are you going to develop this further?

Yes... only if you have seen my features list - its long. I want to build good user experience with useful tools. Not into overkill and unnecessary extra fluff. Tools just to help you learn more easily and efficiently - and share it with others.

Are you going to offer your own video uploads like Google|YouTube?

Naah, thats not my thing. I like to use available resources and make full use of it to our benefit. Plus that type of setup requires huge and expensive infrastructure which I don't have the pockets for. Many more Internet Video sites are popping up, I will keep on integrating their data if you will.

I have a video documentary that I want on Geomentary, what do I do?

For that just upload it on Google Video website. Come back here, search and tag it. Simple eh?

I want to talk to you, may I?

Yes please by all means. Email me at nasiraziz@geomentary.com. I hope you have good ideas that we can "mashup". Cheers !
